Caught napping
Slowpoke
Team Rocket · 67/82 · Common
Slowpoke is in a little wooden rowboat on a pond, slumped over the edge with its eyes shut. Under a cheerful red sun, a butterfly flutters past, cattails sway along the bank, and a few blue fish drift by below. A fishing line trails off the side with a bobber floating on the water, so this Slowpoke came out for a peaceful afternoon of fishing and fell asleep almost right away. It’s a bright, cheerful scene, and the sleeping Slowpoke fits right in.
The card text is surprisingly well matched to the picture. The Pokédex line says that although Slowpoke knows how to fish, no other intelligent behavior has been detected in it. Here, it seems to have skipped even the fishing part. And its first attack is Afternoon Nap, which lets you search your deck for a Psychic Energy card and attach it to Slowpoke. The attack’s Japanese name, ひなたぼっこ, means sunbathing or basking in the sun, which suits the sunny pond. It’s rare for an attack to be named after exactly what the art shows.
